Deep, electronic soul

Elements of Life - Children of the World - Ben Brophy Fusion CutFREE Download: Elements of Life – Children of the World (Ben Brophy Fusion Cut)

Here’s the unreleased Fusion Cut I did of Elements of Life’s uplifting message of hope – ‘Children of the World’. When the track was released there were 5 different versions which had elements I was really feeling. However the elements weren’t included in each of the different mixes, so I spliced my favourite elements into an extended edit. It was supported heavily by the select few heads who were given it, including Dr Bob Jones, Phil Asher, Rainer Truby & Michael Ruetten.
A lot of people have enquired about it, and seeing Josh Milan perform recently reminded me of this, so I thought I’d share with you.

Delectronic Soul: Contemplative Horizons

Deep, dubby & dreamy house mix

A warm autumnal mix featuring 24 slices of deep, electronic soul covering the dreamy, dubby & melodic.

Really enjoyed compiling this: music from scene elders including Nick Holder’s DNH label, fellow Canadian Fred Everything, Jimpster (my favourite Freerange release in a long time), Charles Webster & humble Chicago don Anthony Nicholson. In alongside fresh talent including Atjazz’s Cazuma & Andreas, Noha, Yekim & Milan’s Jonny Bee. Also a nice turnout from old friend Tim Deluxe who returns to roots with a solid dub on Strictly Rhythm.

Turn up & enjoy x

Suncebeat Soul

20 Sun-Kissed Latino & Smooth Deep House Cuts

Ok, so we’re 4 days into the beautiful Suncebeat festival where international friends old & new have been out celebrating music & life.

It’s mid afternoon on the private beach.

Most people are on lilos & loungers, drinks in hand. Some are on the dancefloor.

The Funktion 1 system sounds full bodied & warm.

The atmosphere is blissful – people smiling, laughing, drinking, chilling, grooving.

Sunshine, blue skies, crystal clear seas, conversations & jokes with friends. The afternoon boat party has just set sail.

It’d be rude not to start the beach selection by delving into some Latin influences of our scene, where feel-good sunshine vibes are inherent within the musical DNA, before moving into some laid back house grooves…prepping the way for the night ahead.

Hope you enjoy the music as much as I do selecting & dancing

Suncebeat Soul – Sun-kissed Beach Stage Sounds –

25 Classic & Contemporary Soul Cuts

25 sunkissed soul cuts as played early afternoon on the Suncebeat Beach Stage in Croatia.

Friends old & new chilling in & around the sea, on lilos & loungers, drinks in hand after the night before & ahead of the evening’s escapades.

Fusing retouches of greats including Marvin, Stevie, Minnie & Diana, alongside sleepers such as You & Me & Choked Out Saturday Night with fresh talent including Mocky, Nebraska, Eglo Ella May & Kheyra.

Truly blessed to be part of something so special – with the international music family growing every year. Beautiful, friendly, happy people celebrating life & the shared love of music with soul.

2nd beach stage selection of Latino & Smooth Deep cuts also uploaded.

Turn up, relax & enjoy.

Deep House Music Soul –

Another serving of 17 warm slices across the deep, electronic soul spectrum with freshness from Osunlade’s Piscean Group, goodness from St Germain’s first album in 15 years (forthcoming in Sept), a world exclusive courtesy of New York’s talented Teddy Esposito . There’s also homegrown talent including Jonny Miller, D-Malice’s touch on LayFar feat. Peter Oakden, Atjazz’s Mist Works, Chocky, Andy Compton, Thatmanmonkz & Jimpster’s Freerange 200th release by Eva & Mervin Granger plus an old Fred Everything favourite.

After an amazing Southport Weekender send off it’s now looking forward towards a summer of goodness & of course Southport’s sister event in the Croatian sun…. Get involved: quality music, good vibes and great people under the sun & stars, by the sea. Bliss ;)

Southport Weekender 52 –

Ben Brophy Suncebeat Dome Set

Words do not do justice to the role that Southport Weekender has played in so many people’s lives….mine included. A truly special event where deep friendships & relationships from all around the globe are formed whilst listening to inspiring, soulful music across 5 rooms, in what is undeniably one of the most positive parties anywhere in the world.

From May 9-12th 2015 we partied, danced, laughed & cried as we celebrated Southport Weekender (as we know it) one last time.

It was my absolute privilege, after 20+ years as a punter to help get the party going on Friday night in the Suncebeat Dome.

Check out Southport Weekender in the Croatian Sun – /…

Thank you Alex, Dave, Gavin, Kev, Nick & all the extended family for creating something so special. Looking forward to celebrating music & life at Suncebeat this summer x

Huge love & respect from the bottom of my heart.

Delectronic Soul – Deep House Mix

A laid back mix of 20 smooth deep house tracks, kicking off with some jazzy action from Henry Wu & Homework before heading into more electronic & melodic territories from the likes of Yoruba’s latest signing Vince Watson, our Russian friend Mr Alex Lay-Far (with nice new Phlash mix) & the warmth of Marcel Vogel & FCL.

If you can, be sure to get to the final Southport Weekender at the start of May. 7000 friendly people getting lost in a weekend of soulfully inspired music across 5 rooms. I’ll be there with the music familia. It’s going to be a party to remember…..all info, lineups & details at

And if you like electronic soul music and like to party under the sun & stars, Southport’s sister event under the Croatian skies is a MUST! Pure goodness. Info & details on new website at

Enjoy the music x

From the archives…. guest mix for Michael Ruetten’s ‘SoulSearching’

Somebody just sent me a message about an old ‘deep house classics’  mix I did that I’d forgotten about. I need to find the full mix from the archives & upload it, but Michael Ruetten, expert curator behind the widely respected Soul Searching Radio show got in touch & asked if he could share it.

Below is the first part of my mix. It starts at 1:07:18 of Michael’s show. If you’re not familiar with Michael, then check out his quality shows which are consistently full of soulful goodness, across the board! Click here

NB: Alongside Rainer Truby, Michael delivered one of the finest afternoon DJ sets I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing whilst sailing on the infamous ‘Argonaughty’ along the Adriatic coastline a few years ago. Impeccable. People refused to get off the boat at the end!

Suncebeat 5, Part 1 – Southport Weekender’s sister event in the Croatian sun

The first instalment from Suncebeat 5, Southport Weekender’s sister event in the Croatian sun –

A week of pure inspirational goodness, under the stars, by (& on) the sea with international music family, dancing alongside best friends to favourite musicians & DJ’s. Nature, music, memories & positivity. What’s not to love about it?

A small selection from my sets touching on the deep, jazzy & electronic. More to follow.

A massive thanks & shout to Alex, Dave, Nick, Gavin, Kev, Steve, all the DJ’s & team for helping create such magic and all friends (old, new & yet to connect) for sharing the energy & vibe. – Special!

A selection of deep, melodic & conscious electronic soul music for those who like their house music deep & laid back.
Was in a pretty mellow & introspective mood when I recorded this which I think is reflected in the overall feel & pitch & hence the name.
17 tracks lovingly selected & blended with music from Osunlade, Atjazz, Detroit’s Kyle Hall, South Africa’s Jullian Gomes & Da Capo, Brooklyn’s Alison Crockett, D-Malice & Floating Points among others.
Turn it up, relax & enjoy x

Southport Suncebeat Dome

It was an absolute honor to be asked back to play at Southport Weekender for the big 50 event in the Suncebeat Dome.
The heat was hot & the party was on as we kick started the weekend as we meant to go on. Surrounded by beautiful friends, smiling faces & a first class line up, this was truly a special & memorable weekend. Here’s my set….(check out some reviews of the weekend in previous post).

About Ben Brophy

Music lover, selector, writer & enthusiast

For the love of music...

A youth spent listening to pirate stations, exploring London’s record shops & music scene progressed to throwing parties, running sound-systems & then opening & running 3 award nominated independent record shops up in Leeds (alongside Mat Playford & Tristan DaCunha, residents of Space & Back II Basics), with a team consisting of some the UK’s best underground producers & DJ’s. It was a breeding ground of talent, friendship & musical education as we got to do what we loved: discover & share music with friends, DJ’s, afficionados, hobbyists & collectors from all over the world, day in, day out!

International festivals, playing on stations & at parties including Glastonbury, Southport Weekender & Suncebeat, writing reviews, press & release notes for labels, edits including Elements of Life’s ‘Children of The World’, co-authoring & producing Danny Rampling’s book & DVD, tour managing & helping initiate the 1st ever ‘Kerri Chandler & Friends’ live gig (alongside super talented Magic Number) have also been in the mix, alongside many projects which include helping musicians to teach online & coaching the next generation. Consulting, connecting & supporting good people, nights, labels, events & the scene all go hand in hand and are a natural part of what I love to do. Life’s about sharing & contributing, right?

Music is a passion which I’m blessed has taken me around the world in my support of the scene. It goes without saying that it’s been the centre of so many amazing moments & introduced me to so many of my best friends. I’ve got open ears, but my preferred music to play & share is warm, deep & emotive house music, selected & played with feeling: deep, electronic soul. Thanks for stopping by – enjoy!

It was good to be in the studio & hear them talk Southport, music & memories, reasserting why this event means so much to them & is so widely respected around the world.  Watch the interviews below with Mr Scruff, Kerri Chandler, Gilles Peterson, Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez, Joey Negro & Terry Hunter.

Southport Weekender – the big 50.

Southport 50 was all it was t’d up to be & more. It was up there as one of the very best weekends, epitomised by a good friend (no names, Daniel Daw) who was so eager & excited to arrive on friday that he returned on Sunday afternoon to find this notice on his windscreen, quote “You left your car running this whoooole weekend. Facccccccck” Lol, over£1200 in damage…..and he still said it was well worth it. That’s love of music right there!

Daw left engine running

A small selection of music lovingly compiled & shared for your listening pleasure .

A dose of the warmer tones of house for the inner, to counter the cold & grey outer.
Deep hues spanning S. Africa, Germany, France, Japan, Santorini, US & the UK. As Incognito’s “Bluey” says ‘Beyond colour, beyond creed, we are one nation under the groove.

As always enjoyed selecting this little dose of deepness. Kicking off with one of my favourite S. African producers Da Capo we delve into Jimpster’s new album & his Delusions of Grandeur label plus a couple of Art of Tone’s releases: Elephants I predict to be a track of the summer.
Zulu Mafia take it down before the carnival-tastic samba workout of Tood Terje (which sounded SO good on the beach at GP’s Worldwide Festy). Bahai keeps the latin vibe before Mika Steva’s slammin’ piano groove on Yoruba & Gummitz’s rolling beats. A touch more deepness courtesy of Infected Soul & the unmistakable tones of Diviniti & her words of wisdom in ‘Find Your Light’. A lovely & cheeky retouch of Afronaught’s broken beat anthem ‘Transcend Me’ (courtesy of the talented Jonny Miller) & the old school vibe of ever consistent Fred Everything on Local Talk’s ‘Brothers & Sisters’. And rounding off with my Fusion Cut of ‘Children of the World’ Roll on Suncebeat ;)

[rev_slider Friends]

A deep blend of hypnotic & ancestral inspired house from across the continents.
One of my favourite producer/Dj’s (& all round good guy) Martin ‘Atjazz’ Iveson had the misfortune to lose both parents within a month at the tail end of 2011. The opening track is his heartfelt tribute to them & sets the tone…..
Dedicated to all parents & ancestors for the greatest of gifts – LIFE.

Here’s a small selection of summer & latino fused goodness courtesy of Little Louie Vega & Nu Yorican Soul.
I recently returned from S. America where I was listening to the talented Hector Lavoe, which in turn led me to dig out an old favourite by Lavoe’s nephew Little Louie Vega. The track in question was Pienso En Ti (with Kenny Dope’s unmistakable beats, which Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson championed & used to cut up ferociously, working the floor into a frenzy at The Loft). In turn I dug out the NuYorican Soul mix of Roni Size’s Reprazent, an old underground bomb from Talking Loud – and they both sounded so good in this weather (especially after not hearing them for years) that I decided, whilst the rays were gracing us to select a few of my favourite sun-splashed Vega & Nu Yorican Soul infused tracks: top flight musicianship & percussion the common denominator as we’d expect!
Turn it up, kick back and enjoy – in the sun x
Here’s an unreleased Fusion Cut I did of Elements of Life’s uplifting ‘Children of the World’. A select few heads were given it, including Dr Bob Jones, Phil Asher, Martin Lodge, Rainer Truby & Michael Ruetten, all who played it extensively.
I welcomed New Years Day in listening to Josh Milan (who sings on this track), Jovonn & Joe Claussell at Need 2 Soul. Seeing Josh play the keys & sing reminded me of this track and I thought I’d unearth it and share it with you.
Here’s it featured on Michael Ruetten’s highly recommended Soul Searching show.

Another helping of deep electronic soul in the blend….Simply sharing a tiny selection from the vaults: new & old. As always, much respect & appreciation to all who make, support & represent this music around the world.

I’ve been asked by quite a few people to upload more music, so here we are – a dose of deep electronic soul which I’ve enjoyed putting together, including some archived overdubs from a humble, gentle giant of the scene, Larry ‘Mr Fingers’ Heard.
He’s always been an inspiration in terms of his music, spirit & ethos – all about the music and being real, no time for the hype! He sums it up “I want the music to be a pleasurable experience and I think even on a primal level that’s conveyed to people. You know, we have a component of our being called intuition. I think people pick up on that kind of thing in music and it can either attract or repel you.” The sentiment is articulated in Mr V’s ‘The Long Run’.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I have unearthing this small selection.
